Former Bendel Insurance FC defender Benjamin Tanimu”s dream of using his professional Football to inspire and support talented young people seem to be coming to reality as he launches under 15 male football tournaments in Benin.
The football extravaganza titled
‘Benjamin Tanimu U-15 Football Tournament’ is tentatively scheduled to kick off on March 1,2025 and would run through April.
According to the organizers of the tournament, the Edo Football Association, the tournament is open for teams from across the three senatorial districts of Edo State and that equal opportunity is given for unlimited slots until the registration deadline.
Briefing the press on the proposed formalities for the forthcoming tourney during a media parley held on Friday, January 24, 2025 at the Media Center, Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, the Edo State FA Chairman Fred Newton Erhunmwunsee said that registration for the inaugural edition has officially commenced with immediate effect, adding that school kids between ages 13 and 15 are the target of the tournament. He added that Birth Certificates and last-term academic results will be the most requirement for screening. Additionally, there will be provision for free jerseys at the final stages of the tournament,courtesy of Benjamin Tanimu.
Earlier,the player’s manager and representative Mr. Bature Tanimu, informed the media and key stakeholders of the plans and structure of the tournament, stating that Tanimu’s interest is to contribute to talent discovery in Benin City as the Nigerian international and Crawley Town defender also wants to use the tournament as a platform for
giving back to the society which gave him the platform to excel.He said that they decided to sponsor the tournament in conjunction with the Edo State Football Association under the leadership of Fred Newton to ensure proper organization.
Winners’ prizes for the competition have been pegged at a sum of Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N500,000) for First-Place m
lust as the First Runners-up goes home with Three Hundred Thousand Naira (N300,000).
The third place team takes Two Hundred Thousand Naira (N200,000) in addition to individual prizes for overall top-performers.
According to the FA chairman, it was categorically stated that there will be a special recognition award for the best defender in honour of the tournament’s sole sponsor, Benjamin Tanimu. #
