Olympiacos have completed the signing of Nigerian international Bruno Onyemaechi from Boavista for €2.5 million, pending medical tests and paperwork.
The 25-year-old defender has agreed on a three-and-a-half-year deal with the reigning Europa Conference League champions.
The Greek giants fought off late interest from Benfica and Fenerbahce, as well as unnamed French clubs, to seal Onyemaechi’s signature. Reports from Greek outlet *Parapolitika* indicate that the defender touched base in Athens on Thursday to undergo his medical tests.
Onyemaechi leaves Boavista after an excellent period of his career, having played 77 games and scored five goals with four assists since joining in 2020. He has been an important player to the Portuguese this season, playing all league games, a total of 18 matches, scoring three goals, and providing one assist.
Onyemaechi is highly regarded for his pace, power, and versatility, able to function across the left-hand side of the defense, which makes him a very significant addition to the Olympiacos team in their ambition to strengthen it for both domestic and European campaigns.
The 11-capped Nigerian international also shone in the just-ended 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, helping the team into the final. His transfer is a serious move by both Olympiacos and Boavista as they head into the second half of the season.
