Bayer Leverkusen included a Nigeria International, Victor Boniface in their travel group for their UEFA Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid on 9 PM on January 21, 2025
The Nigerian striker has missed the team’s last three games, last appearing on November 21, 2024, with a hamstring injury but he has now been cleared for inclusion in the team. The return of Boniface will be a major lift for the Bundesliga leaders as they get set for a vital group-phase appointment in Spain.
Before leaving, their squad even trained on the pitch at the Ulrich Haberland Stadium in sub-zero temperatures in an open training session. Boniface took full part, and highlighted his fitness in warm-up and passing exercises, with the mood around the group high.
Boniface, who has starred in Leverkusen’s domestic and European campaigns, is now vying to earn a spot in Xabi Alonso’s starting lineup or as an impact substitute.
But Leverkusen come up against Atletico Madrid, who are also fighting for group-stage qualification, and who they managed to hold to a 2-2 draw at home last time out. The return of Boniface could be significant as the German team seek a positive result at the Wanda Metropolitano.
