The Super Eagles of Nigeria shot-stopper alleged to have been caught up in illegal betting, if found guilty of the crime a ban of a maximum of four years.

The Udinese goalkeeper is alleged to have placed a bet on himself to receive a yellow card a Serie A fixture against Lazio on March 11, 2024. Italy’s Udine Prosecutor’s Office is reportedly looking into unusual betting on Okoye’s booking in that match, which Lazio won 2-1.

According to Messaggero Veneto, another figure under investigation is a pizzeria owner in Udine who sees several Udinese players and officials on a regular basis. Both persons have allegedly been charged with fraud.

The probe was initiated following a report by Sisal, which operates betting, which noticed a flurry of large wagers on the defensive getting booked. The Nigerian keeper was booked for time-wasting in the 64th minute.

Italy’s football federation (FIGC) has opened an inquiry of its own and had flagged the suspicious betting patterns to prosecutors months ago. Should he be found guilty, Okoye would be liable for heavy punishment, which is perhaps the least of his concerns as he is out on the sidelines right now after having wrist surgery.
