2 min read
Rivio Ayemwere 98 minutes penalty earned Ikorodu City victory against Sunshine Stars in a South West derby played at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos State.
Despite Sunshine Stars protest against the stoppage time penalty, Referee Salam Olabode Idris stood his ground by pointing to the spot for penalty kick in favour of Ikorodu City.
Rivio Ayemwere stepped forward to convert the spot kick to give the home team the victory.
The match day 19 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) tie began with a beautiful display of football artistry from both South Westerners.
The visitors attacking playing paid off in the 16th minute when Promise Awosanmi was fouled inside the 18 yards box, but the center referee seems not convinced enough to award a penalty for the Owena Whales.
Adelami Ishola had put Ikorodu City ahead in the 37th minute from a close range strike.
Eight minutes later, Sunshine Stars Captain, Chidozie Iwundu nods into the far right corner of the net from Seth Mayi’s corner kicks to level for his side.
The Abubakar Bala tutored side kept it tight from the midfield to the defense in the second stanzer of the encounter.
The home team scored the winning goal in the 98th minute of the additional six minutes.
The result ensure Sunshine Stars ended the first stanza of the league 15 on log and will host Ikorodu City in the first game of the second stanzer .
