The race for glory in Nigeria’s biggest grassroots football tournament, the Bayelsa Governor’s Football Tournament, popularly known as the Prosperity Cup, continues to gather momentum as more teams secure their places in the Round of 32.
Among the latest qualifiers are Bayelsa United Feeders, Akenfa FC, Brazil FC, Izuo Gillette, and Akinima/Biogbo FC, all of whom delivered impressive performances across various centres.
At the Kpansia centre, Bayelsa United Feeders edged past a resilient Donbai United side, claiming a 3-2 penalty shootout victory after a goalless draw in regulation time. The standout performer was goalkeeper Adamawa Oyintari, whose crucial saves ensured his side’s progression.
Sea Side FA produced a commanding display at the Bishop Dimeari Grammar School (BDGS) centre, cruising to a comfortable 3-0 win over United Stars FC to book their spot in the next round.
At the Igbogene centre, Akinima/Biogbo FC secured a narrow but deserved 1-0 victory over Mighty-Mighty FC. Inesei Tariki’s decisive strike in the 51st minute proved to be the difference in a tightly contested encounter.
Izuo Gillette also progressed from the Swali centre after overcoming Hummels FC of Otuokpoti 4-2 on penalties. Both sides had settled for a 1-1 draw in regulation time before Izuo Gillette held their nerve in the shootout.
Brazil FC demonstrated resilience at the Obunagha centre, defeating Citiboi FC Feeders 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Citiboi took an early lead through Godspower John in the 21st minute, but Nkor Oliver restored parity in the 75th minute following a dominant second-half performance from Brazil FC.
Akenfa FC delivered a strong comeback performance at the Okordia centre, defeating Global City Football Academy 3-1. Despite conceding in the opening minute through Franklin Woyinmie, Golden Bembo equalised in the 11th minute before William Robert netted a brace in the 43rd and 55th minutes to seal qualification.
Meanwhile, attention now turns to crucial fixtures across various local government areas. In Ogbia LGA, former champions Movers FC of Otuasega will clash with Kolo Creek United in a decisive encounter at the Imiringi centre.
In Southern Ijaw LGA, Onyoma FC will face Onde United of Ondewari, while NDU Oilers FC take on Eniwari FC, with both matches scheduled at the BDGS centre.
Defending champions in Sagbama LGA, Agbere FC, are set to battle Kolobiriowei FC at the Ebedebiri centre, while Agoro United will host Akeddei FC at the Ogobiri centre.
As the tournament intensifies, the Prosperity Cup train is set to move to Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area this weekend, with LGA finals expected to commence next month
