Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman etched his name into history with a landmark goal in the Madrid derby, but it proved insufficient as Real Madrid staged a dramatic comeback to secure a 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu.

The 28-year-old became the first Nigerian ever to score in the iconic fixture, taking his tally in La Liga to two goals in 12 appearances during his debut season. His moment of brilliance gave Atletico a first-half advantage, but it was ultimately overshadowed by Madrid’s second-half resurgence.

With league leaders FC Barcelona having earlier stretched their lead with a win over Rayo Vallecano, Madrid entered the clash under pressure to respond and they did, albeit in dramatic fashion.

Despite a lively start from the hosts, it was Atletico who struck first in the 33rd minute. A well-worked move involving Johnny Cardoso and Matteo Ruggeri eventually found its way back to Lookman, who calmly finished from close range following a clever backheel assist by Giuliano Simeone.

Madrid, however, returned from the break with renewed intensity. Within 10 minutes of the restart, Vinícius Júnior converted from the penalty spot before Federico Valverde fired home to turn the game on its head.

Atletico refused to back down, and their persistence paid off in the 66th minute when Nahuel Molina unleashed a stunning strike to level the contest once again.

But the drama was far from over. Vinícius Júnior stepped up once more in the 72nd minute, producing a fine finish from the edge of the box to restore Madrid’s lead and ultimately seal the victory.

The hosts were reduced to 10 men late on after Valverde was shown a straight red card following a VAR review, but they held firm to claim all three points.

The result sees Real Madrid move to 69 points, narrowing the gap on Barcelona to just four, while Atletico remain fourth on 57 points as the title race intensifies.
