Chelsea have suffered another major setback after captain Reece James sustained a fresh hamstring injury during their weekend defeat to Newcastle United in the Premier League.
The injury means the 26-year-old defender is expected to spend several weeks on the sidelines, dealing a significant blow to the club just days after committing his future by signing a new six-year contract.
James will miss Chelsea’s crucial UEFA Champions League Round of 16 second-leg clash against Paris Saint‑Germain on Tuesday night. The Blues face a difficult task heading into the match, needing to overturn a heavy 5–2 aggregate deficit to keep their European hopes alive.
Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior confirmed the setback after the match, revealing that the captain felt discomfort late in the game.
According to Rosenior, the injury occurred toward the closing stages of the encounter against Newcastle.
“Reece felt something in his hamstring at the end of the game against Newcastle. It’s really frustrating and disappointing for us,” he said.
The manager also acknowledged that the recovery period could extend for several weeks, depending on the results of medical assessments.
“It could be weeks with a hamstring injury — it’s never great. Hopefully we can get him scanned and determine the full extent, then we’ll know more.”
Rosenior emphasised the importance of the England international to the squad, describing him as both a key player and a strong dressing-room presence.
“He’s an important leader for us and, of course, our captain.”
James’ latest injury will raise concerns among Chelsea supporters, particularly given his previous struggles with hamstring problems. The defender missed around seven months of the 2023/24 season following surgery but had recently regained fitness and consistency, making 36 appearances this campaign — his highest tally since the 2021/22 season.
Meanwhile, Chelsea may receive a small boost ahead of their clash with the French champions. Brazilian teenage talent Estevao Willian has returned to training and could potentially be available for selection.
Rosenior confirmed the youngster’s status remains under evaluation.
“It’ll be assessed whether he can take part against PSG,” he said, as Chelsea prepare for the daunting challenge of facing the French giants.
With injuries piling up and a significant deficit to overcome, the Blues now face a difficult test as they attempt to keep their European campaign alive.
