Goals from Eberechi Eze and Declan Rice powered Arsenal FC to a commanding victory over Bayer Leverkusen, sealing their place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
The Gunners will now face Sporting CP in the last eight, after the Portuguese side produced a remarkable comeback to overturn a three-goal deficit and eliminate Bodø/Glimt.
Coming into the decisive clash level on aggregate following a 1–1 draw in Germany—secured by a late penalty from Kai Havertz—Arsenal wasted no time asserting their dominance at home.
From the outset, Mikel Arteta’s side applied pressure, with Gabriel Magalhães going close twice from set-pieces, only to be denied by impressive saves from Leverkusen goalkeeper Janis Blaswich.
However, the breakthrough eventually arrived in style. Eze, operating in an advanced role, controlled the ball at the edge of the area before spinning and firing a powerful shot into the top corner—his first goal in the competition.
Arsenal maintained their momentum after the break, and Rice effectively ended the contest. Reacting quickly to a loose clearance, the midfielder showed composure to slot the ball into the bottom corner, doubling the lead and putting the tie beyond doubt.
With victory secured, manager Mikel Arteta took the opportunity to rotate his squad, resting key players ahead of a crucial domestic showdown against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup Final at Wembley Stadium.
The convincing performance serves as a timely confidence boost for Arsenal as they prepare for their first opportunity to secure silverware this season. With captain Martin Ødegaard sidelined through injury, Eze’s growing influence in the number 10 role is a positive sign, and his stunning strike will further fuel his confidence heading into a crucial period.
Arteta had highlighted the importance of experience in Europe prior to the match, and his side once again delivered. Since taking charge in 2019, the Spaniard has overseen a transformation at the club, with this victory marking Arsenal’s 14th win in 17 home Champions League matches under his leadership.
Having lost just three games in all competitions this season, Arsenal’s next challenge is to convert their impressive form into tangible success.
Their immediate focus will be Sunday’s final against Manchester City, where they aim to end a six-year wait for a major trophy—an achievement that could spark a push for multiple titles this campaign.
Looking ahead, Arsenal will turn their attention to Wembley, while Bayer Leverkusen shift back to domestic duties, facing 1. FC Heidenheim in the Bundesliga.
