Ademola Lookman and Raphael Onyedika delivered standout performances as Atletico Madrid and Club Brugge played out an entertaining 3-3 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off clash on Wednesday night.

Lookman found the back of the net for Atletico, while Onyedika scored once and provided an assist to help Club Brugge fight back in a pulsating encounter.

The Nigerian forward etched his name into the club’s history books, becoming the first Atletico Madrid player to score on his Champions League debut since Hector Herrera achieved the feat against Juventus in September 2019.

Lookman is also the first Atletico starter to score on his debut in the competition since Angel Correa did so against Benfica in September 2015.

Atletico made a bright start to the contest, taking the lead in the eighth minute when Julian Alvarez calmly converted from the penalty spot.

The Spanish side doubled their advantage deep into first-half stoppage time, with Lookman finishing confidently to put the visitors firmly in control at the break.

Club Brugge responded strongly after the interval. Onyedika sparked the comeback in the 52nd minute, pulling one back to shift the momentum.

Just eight minutes later, Nicolo Tresoldi restored parity, setting up a tense finale.

With 11 minutes remaining, Atletico regained the lead after Joel Ordonez inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.

However, the drama was far from over. In the 89th minute, Onyedika turned provider, setting up Christos Tzolis for a late equaliser to ensure the tie remains finely balanced ahead of the return leg.

The decisive second leg will take place next Tuesday at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.

In other first-leg play-off fixtures, Bayer Leverkusen defeated Olympiacos despite missing the injured Nathan Tella, while Bruno Onyemaechi featured as a late substitute for the Greek side.

Newcastle United recorded a commanding 6-1 victory over Qarabag, and Bodø/Glimt secured an impressive 3-1 win against Inter Milan.
