Nigeria’s Rivers United endured a disappointing end to their CAF Champions League campaign after falling 3-0 to Moroccan side RS Berkane on Saturday night.
The defeat capped a difficult group stage for the Pride of Rivers, who managed just one draw and suffered five losses in six outings. It was a campaign marked by missed opportunities and inconsistent performances, ultimately leading to their early exit from Africa’s premier club competition.
Coached by Finidi George, Rivers United struggled to find rhythm throughout the encounter. The visitors failed to carve out any clear-cut scoring chances, as the Moroccan hosts dominated proceedings from start to finish.
RS Berkane broke the deadlock in the 38th minute when Youssef Mehri found the back of the net to give the home side a deserved lead. The pressure continued to mount, and just two minutes before halftime, Paul Bassene doubled the advantage, leaving Rivers United with a mountain to climb after the interval.
Any hopes of a comeback were extinguished in the 53rd minute when Bassene struck again to complete his brace and seal a comprehensive victory for the Moroccan outfit.
The result confirmed RS Berkane’s qualification for the quarter-finals, underlining their impressive group stage performance.
In the other group fixture, reigning champions Pyramids FC secured a 3-1 win over Power Dynamos to finish top of the standings. The Egyptian side amassed 16 points from six matches, highlighting their dominance in the group.
For Rivers United, the focus now shifts to domestic competitions as they reflect on a challenging continental campaign and begin preparations for a stronger comeback next season.
