President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Engineer Ahmadu Musa Kida, has called on Nigeria’s elite athletes to repay renewed government confidence with discipline, dedication and podium performances at major international competitions.
Kida’s remarks follows the disbursement of over N200 million in training grants to 26 top athletes by the National Sports Commission (NSC) through its Elite and Podium Board initiative.
Speaking on the development, Kida described the intervention as a strategic investment rather than a routine financial gesture, stressing that such backing must inspire a higher level of professionalism among beneficiaries.
“When a nation commits resources to its athletes, it is making a statement of belief,” Kida said. “That belief must be honored with preparation, focus and results. Funding is important, but performance is the true measure of gratitude.”
The grants, which cover athletes in athletics, wrestling, weightlifting, taekwondo, powerlifting and para-sports, are aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s medal prospects ahead of global competitions including the Commonwealth Games.
Kida applauded the Federal Government and the leadership of the NSC for taking what he termed “a forward-thinking step” toward building a performance-driven sports structure. According to him, sustained and targeted funding remains a critical ingredient if Nigeria is to compete effectively against nations with established high-performance systems.
“For too long, we have spoken about potential,” he noted. “Now is the time to convert that potential into podium appearances. With proper planning and consistent support, our athletes have no reason not to challenge the very best in the world.”
The NBBF President emphasized that financial intervention alone cannot guarantee medals, urging athletes and their technical teams to embrace a culture of accountability.
“Support creates opportunity, but preparation creates champions,” Kida stated. “Every athlete who benefits from this initiative must see it as both a privilege and a responsibility.”
He also commended the establishment of the Elite and Podium Board, chaired by Yusuf Ali, describing it as a structured approach capable of transforming Nigeria’s high-performance landscape.
Kida further noted that the transparent selection process adopted by the NSC adds credibility to the programme and reinforces trust within the sporting community.
“This is how systems are built — through merit, planning and continuity,” he said. “If we remain consistent, the results will speak for themselves.”
With preparations intensifying across training camps, Kida maintained that the message is clear: Nigeria is moving beyond participation to serious contention.
“Our athletes now have the backing,” he concluded. “What the country expects in return is excellence.”
