The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially dismissed an appeal filed by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) seeking to overturn the outcome of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final and strip Senegal of their championship title.
In a statement released on Tuesday, CAF confirmed that its Appeals Committee found no legal or regulatory grounds to annul the result of the final match, thereby reaffirming Senegal as the rightful winners of AFCON 2025.
Morocco had submitted a formal protest following the dramatic and controversial final held at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on January 18, 2026.
The North African nation cited alleged refereeing errors, particularly during a disputed penalty decision that led to Senegal’s temporary walk-off from the pitch for approximately 17 minutes.
Despite the protest, CAF disclosed that a comprehensive review process was conducted, involving official match reports, video evidence, and written submissions from all concerned parties.
After careful consideration, the Appeals Committee upheld the original verdict of the final.
In its official ruling, CAF stated:
“The CAF Disciplinary Board rejected the protest lodged by the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF) regarding alleged violations by the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF) of Articles 82 and 84 of the Regulations of the Africa Cup of Nations, relating to the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 Final.”
The decision brings a definitive end to the post-final controversy, confirming Senegal as the undisputed AFCON 2025 champions after their hard-fought triumph.
For Morocco, the ruling marks another setback in their long-standing quest for continental glory.
Having been confirmed runners-up, the Atlas Lions’ ambition to end their 50-year AFCON title drought has once again been dashed.
Attention will now shift to upcoming international competitions as they seek redemption and renewed success on the African stage.
