Hemjay Cowboys brought Match Day 6 of the Hammola Football Championship to an exciting close with a convincing 3–1 win over Murphy FC on a cool evening.
Both teams began the encounter cautiously, spending the opening nine minutes battling for possession and control of the midfield while probing for early openings. Chances were scarce, but the intent from both sides was evident as they looked to stamp authority on the game.
The breakthrough came in the 10th minute, and it was a moment of brilliance from Hemjay Cowboys. Awarded a free kick roughly 30 yards from goal, Bernard Ajiboye stepped up and unleashed a powerful strike that flew past Murphy FC goalkeeper Taye Hassan, dipping into the bottom corner of the net to give Hemjay Cowboys an early lead.
Murphy FC responded positively and began to apply pressure in search of an equalizer. However, their momentum was checked in the 22nd minute when Akin Eboda was shown a second yellow card and subsequently sent off. The dismissal left Murphy FC trailing and reduced to ten men, compounding their challenge.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Murphy FC showed admirable resilience. By the 36th minute, they were dominating possession and pushing Hemjay Cowboys back into their half. Their persistence paid off when a cross from the right was not properly cleared by the Cowboys’ defense. The loose ball fell invitingly to Malik Adetunji, who made no mistake, firing home the equalizer to level the score. The teams went into the break evenly matched.
The second half saw Hemjay Cowboys emerge with renewed purpose. Their pressure eventually told in the 59th minute when a Murphy FC defender hauled down an opponent inside the penalty area. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Mumeen Sulaimon stepped up and confidently sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to restore Hemjay Cowboys’ lead.
Hemjay Cowboys continued to push forward and nearly extended their advantage in the 72nd minute. From a free kick taken at a tricky angle near the corner and goal line, Muhydeen Odeyemi surprised everyone by opting for a direct, powerful shot instead of a cross. The effort was heading into the net before taking a deflection and going out for a corner kick.
Murphy FC refused to give up and came agonizingly close to equalizing once again in the 83rd minute. Omolade Adebayo struck a fine shot that beat the goalkeeper but rolled narrowly across the face of goal, inches away from a dramatic comeback.
Any remaining hopes of a Murphy FC revival were dashed late in the game. In the 88th minute, Cornelius Ogbobia found the back of the net, sealing the result and sparking celebrations for Hemjay Cowboys as the clock ticked into stoppage time.
