Nigeria’s Super Eagles will step up preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with two training sessions scheduled for Friday in Fes, Morocco, as the countdown to the continental showpiece gathers momentum.
According to the team’s Media Officer, Promise Efoghe, the players will undergo their first official training sessions on Moroccan soil at 10:00am and later in the evening at 6:00pm, as the technical crew intensifies tactical and physical drills ahead of the tournament.
Efoghe explained that the initial training session was shifted to Friday due to the team’s late arrival on Thursday, following their departure from Cairo, Egypt. The Super Eagles players and officials touched down in Fes after concluding a five-day preparatory camp in Cairo.
While in Egypt, the team focused on fine-tuning strategies for their Group C opponents Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania.
As part of their build-up, the Eagles faced the Egyptian national team in a friendly encounter, which ended in a 2–1 defeat, a result that nonetheless provided valuable match fitness and tactical insight for the coaching crew.
AFCON 2025 represents a crucial opportunity for the Super Eagles to restore pride and rekindle belief among Nigerian fans, especially after the disappointment of failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
With expectations high, the team will be keen to channel that setback into motivation on the continental stage.
Nigeria heads into the tournament with recent AFCON history still fresh in memory.
Under former head coach José Peseiro, the Super Eagles came agonisingly close to lifting the trophy at the 2023 AFCON, only to suffer a 2–1 defeat to hosts Côte d’Ivoire in the final.
The three-time African champions will be aiming to go one step further this time, as they continue their quest to reclaim the AFCON title for the first time since 2013, when they were crowned champions in South Africa.
With training now underway in Fes, focus, intensity and unity will be key as the Super Eagles prepare to launch their AFCON 2025 campaign with renewed determination and ambition.
