The Super Eagles of Nigeria have moved up three spots to 38th in the latest FIFA World Rankings released on Wednesday, despite their heartbreak in the 2026 World Cup qualification playoffs.
Nigeria featured in two high-stakes fixtures over the past month, both of which contributed to their points boost. Under head coach Eric Chelle, the Eagles produced a commanding performance to defeat Gabon 4–1 in the World Cup playoff semi-final.
They later battled to a 1–1 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo in the final, before narrowly losing 4–3 on penalties, a result that ultimately cost them a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Although the team fell short of qualification, the competitive nature of their performances ensured a positive movement in the global standings. Nigeria now hold a total of 1,502.46 points, placing them fifth in Africa behind Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, and Algeria.
Morocco maintain their position as Africa’s highest-ranked team with 1,713.12 points, placing them 13th globally. Senegal sit 19th with 1,648.07 points, followed by Egypt in 34th on 1,520.68 points, while Algeria rank 35th with 1,516.37 points.
Despite the disappointment of missing the World Cup, Nigeria’s latest ranking reflects improved performances and offers a foundation for rebuilding ahead of future international competitions.
