Three 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) champions were in action on Thursday night as Paris Saint-Germain fell 2–1 to Real Madrid on Matchday 2 of the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage.
At the PSG Campus, Nigeria’s Super Falcons duo Rasheedat Ajibade and Jennifer Echegini both featured from the start, showcasing the growing influence of African talent on the European stage.
Real Madrid made a strong start, taking a two-goal lead in the first half through Naomie Feller and Athenea del Castillo Redondo. PSG struggled to find their rhythm early on but clawed back into the contest after the break.
Ajibade, who joined PSG from Atlético de Madrid in the summer, reduced the deficit just before the hour mark with a brilliantly executed header — her first-ever goal for the Parisian club and also her maiden UEFA Women’s Champions League strike.
The 24-year-old timed her run perfectly to meet Sakina Karchaoui’s pinpoint cross, rising unmarked at the far post to nod the ball beyond the Madrid goalkeeper.
Despite a spirited late push from PSG, Real Madrid held firm to claim all three points, handing the French champions their first defeat of the group campaign.
