Chelsea have been dealt another potential injury setback after star midfielder Enzo Fernandez pulled out of Argentina’s international squad due to knee inflammation.
The 23-year-old, who has been a mainstay under manager Enzo Maresca this season, has logged more Premier League minutes than any other Chelsea outfield player except Moises Caicedo. However, his run could now be interrupted by what appears to be a troubling knee issue.
A statement from the Argentine Football Association (AFA) confirmed that Fernandez has been diagnosed with synovitis — an inflammation of the lining of the knee joint — in his right leg. A photo released by the team showed him training with noticeable strapping around the affected area.
While the midfielder was already expected to be rested for Argentina’s upcoming friendly against Puerto Rico, his withdrawal has raised concerns at Stamford Bridge about his fitness ahead of a busy fixture period.
The duration of his potential absence remains uncertain, with Chelsea’s medical team set to assess him upon his return to Cobham.
For manager Enzo Maresca, the news adds to a growing list of absentees. Chelsea are already missing several key players, including Moises Caicedo, Andrey Santos, Dario Essugo, and star forward Cole Palmer, who are all sidelined with various injuries.
Fernandez featured for 78 minutes in Argentina’s narrow 1-0 win over Venezuela earlier this week before being withdrawn. He is now expected to return to London for further evaluation and rehabilitation.
Chelsea resume their Premier League campaign after the international break with an away fixture against Nottingham Forest, managed by Ange Postecoglou, who are also struggling for form.
