Nigeria’s Super Falcons duo Rasheedat Ajibade and Jennifer Echegini were in action for Paris Saint-Germain Féminines, but their efforts weren’t enough to stop a rampant Wolfsburg side from cruising to a 4–0 victory in their UEFA Women’s Champions League opener on Wednesday night.
Both Ajibade and Echegini started the encounter, yet PSG’s campaign began in the worst possible fashion when Jackie Groenen mistakenly turned the ball into her own net just seven minutes in, gifting Wolfsburg an early lead.
The German side continued to press and doubled their advantage three minutes before the break, as Ella Peddemors found the back of the net with a composed finish.
Despite PSG’s attempts to fight back in the second half — registering 16 shots with six on target — they struggled to break through Wolfsburg’s organized defense and were punished for their missed chances late in the game.
Veteran striker Alexandra Popp extended the lead in the 90th minute, before Janina Minge converted a stoppage-time penalty to seal an emphatic victory for the hosts.
The defeat leaves PSG with much to ponder as they look to recover quickly in their next group fixture, while Wolfsburg made a powerful statement of intent in their quest for European glory.
