Nigeria’s preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers has suffered another setback, with Felix Agu emerging as a major doubt for the upcoming fixtures against Lesotho and Benin Republic.
The Werder Bremen defender sustained an injury during his club’s 1–0 Bundesliga victory over St. Pauli on Saturday. Agu was forced off in the 45th minute and replaced by Isaac Schmidt before halftime.
According to reports from DAILY POST, the full extent of Agu’s injury is yet to be determined, but early indications suggest it could rule him out of Nigeria’s crucial qualifiers this month.
Agu’s potential absence would be another blow for head coach Eric Chelle, who had only just named the 24-year-old in his 23-man squad for the qualifiers on Friday.
The dynamic full-back, who has made just one senior appearance for the three-time African champions, was expected to provide defensive depth and versatility on either flank.
Nigeria are already dealing with multiple injury concerns, with Cyriel Dessers and Bright Osayi-Samuel recently ruled out and replaced by Zaidu Sanusi and Chrisantus Uche.
The Super Eagles will face Lesotho on October 10 in Polokwane, South Africa, before hosting Benin Republic on October 14 for the second of the two critical 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.
With Nigeria sitting third in their group three points behind leaders Benin Republic and South Africa — every game now carries significant weight in their quest for qualification.
