Super Eagles striker Terem Moffi was on target for OGC Nice, but his second-half penalty was not enough to prevent a 2-1 home defeat to AS Roma in their UEFA Europa League group stage opener on Wednesday night.
Moffi, who also scored at the weekend in Nice’s 4-1 Ligue 1 defeat to Brest, continued his fine personal scoring form despite his team’s struggles.
At the Allianz Riviera, the visitors took control early in the second half. Roma defender Evan Ndicka opened the scoring in the 52nd minute before Gianluca Mancini doubled the advantage just three minutes later, putting the Italians firmly in command.
Nice were handed a lifeline in the 77th minute when Moffi stepped up to convert from the penalty spot, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to halve the deficit. However, Francesco Calzona’s men were unable to find an equaliser as Roma held firm to secure all three points.
The result leaves Nice with work to do in Group E as they aim to bounce back in their next Europa League fixture. For Moffi, though, his consistent scoring form will be encouraging for Nigeria’s national team selectors ahead of next month’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying games.
