Wolverhampton Wanderers booked their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after a convincing 2-0 win against Premier League rivals Everton at Molineux on Tuesday night.
Goals from Marshall Munetsi and Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare sealed the result in a lively third-round clash.
The breakthrough came midway through the first half when Zimbabwe international Marshall Munetsi rose highest to head home a well-delivered corner, giving Wolves a deserved lead.
The home side dominated possession and created more clear-cut chances, while Everton struggled to find rhythm in the final third.
The highlight of the night, however, was provided by Wolves’ summer signing Tolu Arokodare, who came off the bench to register his first goal for the club.
The 24-year-old Nigerian striker latched onto a through ball and produced a composed chip over the onrushing goalkeeper to put the game beyond Everton’s reach late in the second half.
It was a perfect way for Arokodare to open his account in English football after completing a deadline-day move from Belgian outfit KRC Genk.
His stylish finish brought Molineux to its feet and underlined the qualities Wolves’ scouting department saw in him — height, pace, and composure in front of goal.
Manager Gary O’Neil praised his side’s performance and highlighted the importance of Arokodare’s goal:
“Tolu has settled in really well since arriving and tonight’s goal will give him confidence. It’s always good for a striker to get off the mark early. We’re delighted for him and pleased to progress in the competition.”
For Wolves fans, the sight of their new forward opening his tally with such finesse will raise hopes that he can become a reliable source of goals this season, especially as the club looks to balance their Premier League campaign with cup ambitions.
With this result, Wolves progress to the Carabao Cup fourth round, where they will be hoping for another favorable draw as they chase silverware. Everton, meanwhile, face more questions about their form and depth as they bow out of the competition earlier than expected.
