Nigeria’s sprint queen, Tobi Amusan, has secured the nation’s first medal at the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, winning silver in the final of the women’s 100m hurdles on Monday.
Amusan, the former world champion and world record holder, produced a brilliant run of 12.29 seconds, narrowly missing out on the gold medal. She finished just behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who stormed to victory in a new national record of 12.24 seconds, while Grace Stark of the United States clinched bronze in 12.34 seconds. Fellow American Masai Russell settled for fourth in 12.44 seconds.
Earlier in the day, Amusan had looked sharp in the semifinals, cruising to victory in her heat with 12.36 seconds (-0.2), holding off strong challenges from Nadine Visser of the Netherlands (12.45s) and Pia Skrzyszowska of Poland (12.51s).
The silver medal marks a significant achievement for Amusan, who has battled through injuries and scrutiny in recent seasons but continues to show her resilience on the global stage. Her podium finish also gives Nigeria its first medal at the Tokyo 2025 Championships, providing a huge boost to Team Nigeria’s campaign.
