Nigeria’s sprint queen and reigning 100m hurdles world record holder, Tobi Amusan, began her title defense in style on Sunday morning at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, breezing through the heats to secure a place in Monday’s semi-finals.
Lining up in the final heat of the morning session, Amusan faced stiff competition from some of the world’s best hurdlers, including Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas and Italy’s Elena Carraro. But the Nigerian star wasted no time stamping her authority.
She produced a lightning-quick reaction from the blocks and controlled the race with her trademark smooth hurdling to finish first in 12.53 seconds—a performance that looked effortless and assured.
Charlton followed closely in 12.69 seconds to take second place, while Carraro finished third in 12.86 seconds, both also booking safe passage into the semi-finals.
Amusan’s time ranked fifth fastest overall across all six heats on the day, underscoring the depth of competition in the women’s hurdles this year.
Jamaica’s Danielle Williams, the reigning world champion, sent an early statement of intent by winning Heat 2 in a blazing 12.40 seconds, the fastest time of the morning.
She was followed by America’s Grace Stark (12.46s), the Netherlands’ Nadine Visser (12.48s), and Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska (12.51s), all of whom advanced impressively.
For Amusan, the Tokyo campaign is about more than just qualifying—it’s about reclaiming her crown and proving once again why she remains one of Nigeria’s greatest-ever athletes.
The semi-finals, scheduled for Monday, promise a mouthwatering clash of the world’s elite hurdlers, with Amusan right in the thick of the action.
