Nigeria’s hammer thrower, Oyesade Olatoye, gave a spirited performance at the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, but fell just short of qualifying for the women’s hammer throw final.
Competing in the Group A qualification round, Olatoye opened her series with a throw of 66.78m, setting the tone for her campaign.
However, her second attempt ended in disappointment after she fouled, momentarily halting her momentum. Showing resilience, she returned with a much stronger final throw of 68.82m, her best of the competition.
Despite the improvement, the Nigerian athlete’s effort placed her 10th in Group A and 21st overall, falling outside the top 12 athletes required to progress to the final.
For Olatoye, who has been one of Nigeria’s most consistent performers in the throwing events, this outing will be seen as a valuable step forward on the global stage, even though it ended in heartbreak.
Her performance once again highlights the need for greater support and investment in Nigeria’s field athletes, many of whom continue to compete against the world’s best under challenging circumstances.
