Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Vitor Pereira has expressed satisfaction with Tolu Arokodare’s performance on his Premier League debut, despite Wolves suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Saturday.
The 24-year-old Nigeria international, who only recently joined the Midlands club, was handed a surprise start by Pereira even though he had managed just one training session with the squad prior to the game.
Arokodare featured from the opening whistle and battled hard against a resilient Newcastle backline. Although he did not register a goal or assist, his movement and physical presence up front offered glimpses of the qualities that convinced Wolves to bring him in.
The striker lasted 66 minutes on the pitch before making way for Jhon Arias, with Wolves still searching for a breakthrough. Unfortunately, the visitors were unable to turn the game around, as Newcastle held firm to secure the three points.
Speaking after the match, Pereira was quick to praise the Nigerian forward’s effort under the circumstances:
“He (Arokodare) did well. Of course, he is not yet in the physical condition to do better, but considering the situation, he showed good signs,” the Wolves manager told the club’s official website.
Despite the defeat, Pereira’s comments highlight the club’s confidence in Arokodare’s potential as he continues to adapt to the pace and intensity of English top-flight football. With more training sessions and match sharpness, Wolves will be hoping the former Genk striker can become an important asset in their push for stability this season.
