‎Nigeria’s qualification campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered another major setback on Friday after South Africa cruised to a convincing 3-0 victory over Lesotho in Johannesburg.

‎The Bafana Bafana, already sitting comfortably at the top of Group C before kick-off, tightened their grip on the summit with a dominant display that leaves the Super Eagles’ chances hanging by a thread.

‎Mohau Nkota gave the home side a flying start in the 15th minute, calmly slotting home to set the tone for the evening. Despite Lesotho’s attempts to stay in the game, South Africa’s superiority was evident, and they eventually doubled their advantage midway through the second half. Lyle Foster made it 2-0 in the 63rd minute, before Oswin Appollis struck again just four minutes later to seal a comprehensive victory.

‎The result means Hugo Broos’ men now boast 16 points from seven matches, stretching five points clear of nearest challengers Benin Republic, who sit second on 11 points. Rwanda occupy third position with eight points, while Nigeria languish in fourth place with just seven points.

‎The Super Eagles, who have managed only one win so far in the qualifying series, face a crucial clash against Rwanda on Saturday evening. Failure to secure maximum points could leave their World Cup dreams in tatters.
