Abia Warriors Football Club of Umuahia will be seeking redemption this weekend as they travel to Bauchi for a tough Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 3 fixture against Wikki Tourists Football Club.
The Umuahia-based side, led by coach Imama Amapakabo, will be hoping to recover quickly from the narrow 1-0 defeat they suffered in Lafia against Nasarawa United. The clash at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi, scheduled for Sunday, September 7, 2025, marks their second consecutive away game of the season. Kickoff is set for 4:00 pm.
Confidence in the Camp
Despite the setback in Lafia, team captain Augustine Njoku is confident that the Warriors can put in a strong performance. He noted that the technical crew and players have corrected the lapses observed in previous games, stressing that the team is determined to build on last season’s resilience when they avoided defeat in two consecutive away matches.
Coach Amapakabo also expressed optimism, particularly about his attacking line. He revealed that extra sessions have been dedicated to improving the strikers’ techniques and finishing, and he believes the forwards will rise to the occasion in Bauchi.
League Standings
Going into Matchday 3, Abia Warriors sit in 11th place on the NPFL log with three points from two matches. Their opponents, Wikki Tourists, newly promoted back to the top flight, have had a bright start, amassing four points from their opening two fixtures to occupy sixth position.
Head-to-Head Record (Last 5 Meetings)
07/05/23: Wikki Tourists 4–0 Abia Warriors
12/02/23: Abia Warriors 1–1 Wikki Tourists
28/05/22: Wikki Tourists 1–0 Abia Warriors
02/02/22: Abia Warriors 3–0 Wikki Tourists
18/07/21: Wikki Tourists 1–0 Abia Warriors
Recent history favors Wikki Tourists, who have won three of the last five meetings, including a resounding 4–0 victory the last time both sides met. However, Abia Warriors will draw inspiration from their 3–0 triumph in 2022.
Injury Update
Good news for the Umuahia faithful as first-choice goalkeeper Nmecha Johnson has recovered from the ankle injury that sidelined him. His return provides a boost for Amapakabo’s side as they prepare for Sunday’s showdown.
With both teams eager to make a statement early in the season, fans can expect a highly competitive contest in Bauchi.
