A pre-season friendly match between City FC of Abuja and JKU FC of Tanzania took an unexpected turn when a swarm of bees invaded the pitch, forcing players and officials to seek shelter.
The match was interrupted in the 77th minute as medical staff attended to an injured player, and the bees saw an opportunity to take over.
In a 45-minute video circulating online, players and officials from both teams were seen lying down on the pitch to avoid getting stung by the bees.

The match was delayed for a significant amount of time, giving the bees ample opportunity to assert their dominance over the pitch.
Fortunately, there were no reports of any serious injuries or allergic reactions from the bee stings.
This incident is reminiscent of a similar event that occurred during a Zambian Super League match between Forest Rangers and Zesco United in December 2022.
A swarm of bees invaded the pitch, forcing players and officials to scamper for safety.
The match was temporarily stopped for close to 30 minutes before play resumed
While it’s unclear what triggered the bees to invade the pitch in this instance, there have been cases where bees have invaded sports stadiums due to various reasons, including:
Bees may invade pitches if they have nested nearby or are attracted to food or sweet substances on the field.
Weather conditions, such as strong winds or rain, can also contribute to bees becoming agitated and invading the pitch.
The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of outdoor sports and the importance of being prepared for unexpected interruptions.
