In a thrilling semifinal match at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), Madagascar’s Barea team made history by defeating Sudan 1-0 in extra time.
The winning goal was scored by Toky Rakotondraibe in the 116th minute, securing Madagascar’s first-ever appearance in a final of any African football competition.
Despite being reduced to 10 players late in the second half after Fenhasina Razafimaro was sent off in the 79th minute, Madagascar’s defense held strong against Sudan’s attacks.
The Malagasy team’s resilience paid off when Rakotondraibe scored the decisive goal in extra time, capitalizing on a splendid series of passes.
Sudan had several opportunities to score, but they failed to capitalize on their numerical advantage after Madagascar’s player was sent off.
Walieldin Khidir’s missed chance in the 89th minute was particularly crucial, as it would have given Sudan the lead.
Madagascar’s victory marks a historic milestone for the team, which has previously won the Indian Ocean Games’ football tournament on three occasions.
Their best finishes in African competitions were third place at the 2022 CHAN and the 2015 COSAFA Cup. This final appearance is a testament to the team’s determination and skill.
Madagascar will face the winner of the second semifinal between Morocco and Senegal on Saturday, August 30, at the Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya. Sudan, on the other hand, will play the loser in the third-place match on Friday in Kampala.
