Major League Soccer (MLS) club Los Angeles FC has officially announced the signing of South Korean forward Son Heung-min from Tottenham Hotspur.
Son joins LAFC after spending 10 remarkable years with Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League.
During his tenure with Tottenham Hotspur, Son scored 173 goals across all competitions, registered 101 assists, and became the first Asian player to win the Premier League Golden Boot in the 2021-2022 season.
As captain of the South Korean National Team, Son has appeared in three World Cups and is one of South Korea’s all-time leading scorers with over 130 appearances
”Sonny is a global icon and one of the most dynamic and accomplished players in world football,” said LAFC Co-President & General Manager John Thorrington. “His ambition, ability, and character align perfectly with our values at LAFC. We are proud that he has chosen Los Angeles for the next chapter of his extraordinary career. Sonny is a proven winner and a world-class individual, and we are confident he will elevate our club and inspire our community – both on and off the pitch.”
The contract details reveal that Son has signed with LAFC through the 2027 season, with an option for 2028 and 2029. The transfer fee was reportedly a league record $26.5 million, although the exact figures weren’t disclosed in the official announcement
Son’s arrival is expected to boost LAFC’s MLS Cup ambitions, reuniting him with former Spurs teammate Hugo Lloris. Los Angeles, with its large Korean population, presents a strategic platform for Son to extend his influence off the pitch, similar to Shohei Ohtani’s impact with the LA Dodgers.
