Burnley Football Club has officially confirmed the signing of French midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu from Chelsea.
The 21-year-old has joined the Clarets on a five-year contract, becoming the seventh addition to Scott Parker’s squad this summer.
The transfer fee is reported to be over £20 million, with some sources suggesting it’s similar to the £23.2 million Chelsea paid to sign Ugochukwu from Rennes in 2023.
Burnley beat off stiff competition from around the Premier League and Europe to secure Ugochukwu’s signature.
Ugochukwu spent two years at Chelsea, making 15 appearances in all competitions during his first season.
He was loaned out to Southampton for the 2024-25 season, where he made 31 appearances and scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser against West Ham. Despite Southampton’s relegation, Ugochukwu’s performances earned praise, showcasing his potential as a dynamic box-to-box midfielder.
Ugochukwu’s departure from Chelsea is part of the club’s ongoing squad overhaul under Enzo Maresca.
He was considered surplus to requirements, along with other players like Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell, who are training separately from the first team.
Ugochukwu’s signing is expected to bolster Burnley’s midfield, providing a composed and energetic presence.
He’ll link up with fellow midfielder Loum Tchaouna, who recently signed from Lazio. Ugochukwu’s Premier League experience and versatility will be valuable assets for Burnley as they aim to avoid relegation.
Ugochukwu may make his debut against Tottenham Hotspur on August 16, 2025, as Burnley kicks off their Premier League campaign.
