‎The captain of the Super Falcons of Nigeria, Rasheedat Ajibade, has revealed that the boastful comments from Zambia’s camp before their quarter-final match at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations motivated her team to deliver a resounding 5-0 victory.

‎The Super Falcons dominated the match, with Osinachi Ohale, Chinwendu Ihezuo, and Oluwatosin Demehin scoring goals, while Esther Okoronkwo and Folashade Ijamilusi netted the other two goals, both assisted by Ajibade.

‎Before the match, Zambia’s star striker, Barbara Banda, had expressed confidence in her team’s ability to take on the Super Falcons. “We are not scared, but we respect them because we know the game is 90-plus, so we are going to speak on the pitch. We want to hunt it,” Banda said during a pre-match press conference. However, the Zambian team failed to back up their boasts on the pitch.

‎Ajibade, who was named Player of the Match, credited the pre-match comments from Zambia’s camp as a source of motivation for her team. “There was a lot of talk from the Zambia camp and we heard all of it,” Ajibade said in the post-match press conference. “It was big motivation for us in this game.”

‎In the group stage, Zambia had scored six goals in their three matches, with Barbara Banda and Racheal Kundananji accounting for all six goals. However, they were unable to replicate their form against the Super Falcons.

‎The 5-0 scoreline is the highest goal margin in a single game at this year’s WAFCON.

The Super Falcons’ dominant performance has set them up for a semi-final showdown against the winner of the South Africa-Senegal match.
