Ghana’s Black Queens have secured a spot in the semi-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a thrilling penalty shootout victory over Algeria.
The match ended goalless after extra time, but the Black Queens’ goalkeeper, Cynthia Konlan, made two crucial saves in the penalty shootout to help her team win 4-2.
The Black Queens dominated the game, creating several scoring opportunities, but were unable to capitalize on them. Stella Nyamekye thought she had given Ghana the lead in the first half, but her goal was disallowed after a video assistant referee (VAR) review.
Doris Boaduwaa and Chantelle Hlorkah also came close to scoring, but the Algerian goalkeeper made crucial saves to keep her team in the game.
In the penalty shootout, Cynthia Konlan became the heroine of the match, saving two spot kicks to help the Black Queens win 4-2.
The team’s victory marked their first semi-final appearance in nine years, and they will now face host Morocco on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
