Hosts Morocco secured their first win at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) finals with a 4-2 victory over DR Congo at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.

The match saw end-to-end drama, with both teams creating scoring opportunities.

DR Congo took the lead through Merveille Kanjinga just six minutes into the game.

However, Ghizlane Chebbak restored level terms for Morocco in the 25th minute before putting them in front in the 43rd minute with a stunning strike. Chebbak completed her hat-trick in the 75th minute, while Yasmin Mrabet sealed the win with a penalty in the 83rd minute.

DR Congo fought hard, with Flavine Mawete scoring the equalizer in the 70th minute. Despite their efforts, Les Léopards Dames fell victim to a late push by the hosts.

The victory sees Morocco move to the top of Group A with four points, level with Zambia who have a lower goal difference. DR Congo, who registered their first goal of the tournament, are seated in last position after losing both games so far.

Morocco will face Senegal on the final day of Group A action on Saturday, while DR Congo need nothing less than a victory when they face Zambia.
