The 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) kicked off with a thrilling match between host Morocco and Zambia, ending in a 2-2 draw.
The match was played in Group A, with both teams showing impressive skills and determination.
Barbara Banda gave Zambia a perfect start, scoring just two minutes into the game with a low shot that slipped through the Moroccan goalkeeper’s fingers.
The referee awarded a penalty to Morocco after VAR confirmed a foul on Najat Badri. Ibtissam Jraidi made no mistake, sending the Zambian goalkeeper the wrong way to level the score 1-1 in the 12th minute.
Racheal Kundananji scored a well-placed goal in the 28th minute, assisted by Barbara Banda, to give Zambia a 2-1 lead.
However, Morocco’s captain Ghizlane Chebbak drew her side level in the 88th minute, securing a 2-2 draw for the hosts.
The group’s other fixture will feature Senegal taking on the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday, July 7. Meanwhile, nine-time WAFCON champions Nigeria’s Super Falcons will face Tunisia in Group B.
