The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has appointed former midfielder Gennaro Gattuso as the new manager of the Italian national team, replacing Luciano Spalletti.

Gattuso, 47, is a former AC Milan player and a member of Italy’s 2006 World Cup-winning squad.

He made 73 appearances for Italy and will now lead the team into the World Cup 20 years after his playing days.

Italy failed to qualify for the last two World Cups and the 2024 European Championship was an exception after winning Euro 2020.

Gattuso has managed 9 teams in 11 years, with his longest stint being 2 seasons with Pisa.

He led Pisa to promotion to Serie B but resigned after the team finished bottom the following season.
