Zimbabwe’s President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, has announced a reward of $150,000 for the national football team, the Warriors, if they win against Nigeria in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier. This commitment was confirmed by Nqobile Magwizi, president of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), as the team aims for its first World Cup qualification.
Currently, the Warriors are at the bottom of Group C with only two points from four matches, making this a critical time for their campaign.
The team will first play against Benin Republic at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban today, followed by a match against Nigeria’s Super Eagles in Uyo next Tuesday.
ZIFA’s statement indicated that the government is reaffirming its support for national football by offering $150,000 for a win against Benin and another $150,000 for a victory over Nigeria.
The statement read: “The Government of Zimbabwe has reiterated its commitment to national football by providing substantial financial backing to the Warriors ahead of their important FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
“To acknowledge the team’s efforts and as a motivational gesture, President Emmerson D. Mnangagwa has promised a winning bonus of $150,000 to the players, coaching staff, and support team for each victory in the upcoming matches against Benin on March 20 and Nigeria on March 25.
“This means that in addition to the $1 million allocated by the Government for the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Finals, the Warriors could earn an extra $300,000 if they win both games.
“This support highlights the Government’s steadfast commitment to the development and success of football in Zimbabwe and the Warriors’ aspirations for World Cup qualification.
“The nation is encouraged to unite behind the team as they represent our hopes and pride on the field.”
