Niger Delta Sports Festival Zonal Elimination Begins In Eket

Count down to April 1, 2025 commencement date for the maiden edition of the Niger Delta Sports Festival in Uyo,, the zonal elimination has begun in Eket Senatorial District of Akwa Ibom State.
Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District for the zone, will take turn for the elimination before Uyo Senatorial District for Uyo zone.
Speaking at Eket on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Sports in Akwa Ibom State, Elder Paul Bassey said the elimination is to screen the athletes as well as select the best amongst them that will represent the state.
Bassey said the screening will help in discovering top talents in different sports for the State. The Commissioner expressed confidence over the level of preparations for the up coming festival, adding that the Akwa Ibom State Government has put everything in place to ensure a smooth hosting of the event
He commended the organisers of the festival, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for bringing the event to Akwa Ibom State.
The Director of Coaching and Technical, Ministry of Sports, Coach Catherine Ekuta described the festival as a great opportunity for the participating states to discover talents in different sports.
She added that the festival would give the athletes opportunity to compete and showcase their talents, that will take the individual states to an enviable height in sports.
Coach Ekuta stressed that the technical committee of the festival will ensure the best are picked amongst the athletes in the elimination screening.
A member of the Technical Subcommittee, Coach Daniel Umoete, who is in charge of the athletics event, said six athletes are picked in each of the race in the zonal elimination and the final stage of screening will take place in Uyo where all of them will participate in order to pick the best to represent the State.
In their separate speeches, some of the athletes, Miss Miracle Enefiok, Daniel Edoho Bassey and Miss Bella Tom, while interacting with the media, thanked the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for initiating the festival and promised to win medals.
No fewer than seventeen sports have been lined up for participation by nine states of the Niger Delta region.
