Governor Sule Backs Revamping Of Akwanga Sports Academy

In a deliberate move geared towards boosting sports development, the Nasarawa State Governor, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, has given a positive consent to the revamping of the Sports Academy located in Akwanga Local Government Area of the State.
The Governor gave the assurance after the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Kwanta Yakubu, alongside the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Ibrahim Adamu Alhassan, led members of Je Je Bike Riders Association of Nigeria headed by Tijjani Saint James paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, Lafia, on Friday.
The Bikers’ Association is seeking partnership with the Nasarawa State Government to donate a classroom of computers as part of its corporate social responsibility task, and had chosen the Sports Academy, Akwanga, as first beneficiary, to ease learning and encourage computer literacy among students.
Governor Sule said his administration would offer every necessary support to ensure that the Sports Academy facility is given a massive facelift in order to revitalize, revamp, and make it a hub for talent harnessing.
The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Kwanta Yakubu, who had initially briefed the Governor on the purpose of the visit, disclosed that he had already set up a powerful Technical Committee headed by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Ibrahim Adamu Alhassan, to come up with modalities to reform the Sports Academy and make it a beacon of learning and sports’ excellence in Nigeria.
On Friday, Kwanta embarked on an on-the-site assessment of the Sports Academy, following the submission of a comprehensive report by the Technical Committee he set up to revitalize and revamp the institution.
During the visit, the Commissioner inspected facilities, encroached lands, interacted with staff and students, and assessed the overall condition of the academy.
The Commissioner’s visit was aimed to identify areas requiring improvement and recommend to the Government strategies to enhance the Academy’s infrastructure, man-power, programmes and services.
“The task before us is how to convert this facility to a world-class one and to bring it to ts glory days.
“The Governor is committed to developing both the educational and sports sectors of the State, and this isn’t an exception.
“The Governor has a special interest on the Sports Academy. This was his first priority project in the first year of his first tenure when I was his aide on Youth and Sports Development, but I am glad to inform you that as Commissioner today, I have visited the Governor in regards, and he has given us his green light, and this will become a reality sooner than later”, he assured.
He commended staff, students, and critical stakeholders, particularly the Community members where the Institution is located, for their cooperation to fast-track the process.
Before leaving the Sports Academy premises alongside his delegation, the Commissioner pledged to support the Institution with balls and jerseys in the coming days to enable them meet urgent competitive tasks.
Also present in the Commissioner’s delegation on the on-the-site assessment tour were Hon. Shuaibu Sani(SSA to the Governor on Youth and Students’ Matters), a handful of the Committee members, including Yusuf Ahmad(Director, Facilities and Stadium Management), Lawrence Shammah(Director, Sports Organizing), Ms Helen Ken Madaki (Director, Administration and Supplies), and Dan Yakubu(Technical Assistant to the Honourable Commissioner).
Representatives from the State Ministries of Works and Lands also were parts of the Commissioner’s encourage.
