Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that Victor Boniface is close to making a return after two months out with a hamstring injury, though the Nigerian striker is unlikely to feature against Mainz on Tuesday.
Boniface, 24, suffered the injury in November after international duty and has not played since. Before his setback, he had netted eight goals in 15 appearances for Leverkusen this season, following up on his 14-goal league campaign last term which helped the club win their first Bundesliga title.
His absence has been barely felt, with Leverkusen winning all six Bundesliga games without him and averaging 3.2 goals per game thanks to the current form of Patrik Schick, scoring every 51 minutes in the league.
