Dazzling Ipswich Town midfielder Chijioke Onuchukwu has committed his international future to the Super Eagles, shunning the opportunity to represent England. The 19-year-old, though eligible for England with his British passport, has pledged his allegiance to the Flying Eagles ahead of the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
Reports indicate that Onuchukwu is a subject for call-up to Nigeria’s training camp in preparation for the tournament this April. A keen fan of the Super Eagles, Onuchukwu religiously follows the team and its stars, including Victor Osimhen and Ola Aina, on social media.
His decision underlines the increasing appeal of the Super Eagles to dual-nationality players. Others in recent times include Ola Aina, William Troost-Ekong, Joe Aribo, Ademola Lookman, and Calvin Bassey-all born outside of Nigeria but now key squad members. Alex Iwobi had also been a part of the switch to represent the West Africans from England’s junior side.
Onuchukwu joined Ipswich Town last summer on a deal until June 2026 and has been turning in good displays for the side, one of which was during Ipswich Town U21’s 5-1 demolition of Cardiff City in the Professional Development League.
His inclusion further deepens the pool of talents in Nigeria, and much is expected from his contributions at the U20 tournament.
