NNL Fines Sokoto, Ijebu United For Assault On Match Officials

The board of Nigeria National League (NNL) has fined Sokoto United and Ijebu United Football Clubs various sums of money for going contrary to the NNL rule framework in their Day three(3) encounters decided Friday 1st December, 2023 and Saturday 2nd of December, 2023 at their home grounds.

 

Unsavory reports recieved by the NNL stated that supporters of both teams allegedly attacked match officials in their encounters.

 

Sokoto United was the away team against Kebbi United at the Ginginya Memorial Stadium,Sokoto.

 

Their fans at half time intimidated and attacked match officials with missiles while they were retiring back to the dressing room and same repeated itself on their way out to resume the second half, this led to delay in commencement of the second half.

 

The same attack continued at the end of the match which ended 2-1 in favour of the home side Kebbi United. The bus of Kebbi United was also attacked and it’s windscreen destroyed in the process, a player of Kebbi United ,Eli John was equally injured during the attack by Supporters of Sokoto United.

 

The NNL rules the incident as an infraction and invoked sections 16.1,16.3 and 27,1.3 to fine Sokoto United the sum of N1,000.000.00(One million Naira) and N50,000 (Fifty thousand Naira only) to replace the damaged windscreen of Kebbi United Bus and Hospital bill for the treatment of the injured Kebbi Player, Eli John.

 

The NNL in taking the summary jurisdiction also,rules that the next three (3) home games of Kebbi United at the Ginginya Memorial Stadium,will be under strict closed Doors.

 

Sokoto United have been given till Friday the 15 of December to respond to the fine.

 

Moreso, Sokoto United chief coach, Muhammed Dan Asabe and his goalkeeper Trainer, Shehu Rilwan were handed a two months ban by the NNL for the infamous roles they played in the attack on match officials.

 

Similarly, Ijebu United are to pay the sum of N500,000.00 (Five hundred thousand Naira) for the attack their supported meted to match Officials in their Day three encounter with Tradesafe Football club of Lagos,at the Dipo Dina Stadium,Ijebu-Ode,Ogun State .

 

Supporters of Ijebu United were alleged to have descended on match officials after the away team,Trade Safe equalized in the game that ended 1-1.

 

NNL had to draw from the position of the rule book 27,1.3 to sanction Ijebu United.

 

They are to ensure the fine is paid on or before their next home game.
